Has technology spoiled literary classics?

Like many avid readers, I have a stockpile of books I want to read. Among these are classic literature. I am referring to Crime and Punishment, Moby Dick, The Sun Also RIses, etc. These are classics for a reason, but we live in an age where I can literally use a search engine to learn plots, characters and the intended metaphors in a fraction of the time. Should I spend this time getting to know these stories on the author's level, or should I watch the movies, read the writing on them and move on to more recent works of art?
